Zoë Kravitz recently appeared in the cover story for Esquire Magazine, in which she finally revealed how a decision she made at age 11 might’ve been hurtful to her mother, actress Lisa Bonet.

As Entertainment Weekly reports, Kravitz spent most of her young childhood living with her mother, only seeing her father, singer Lenny Kravitz, “a few times a year” before deciding to move to Miami to live with him at 11. Looking back on when her dad would visit, she explained, “It was this whirlwind of a completely different universe. And then I would go home to this really quiet, really simple life.”

Kravitz explained that she found a certain freedom living with her dad that she didn’t necessarily have in her mom’s stricter household: “It wasn’t that my dad didn’t care. He just cared about different things,” she told Esquire.

But she learned that living with her father wasn’t necessarily perfect either.

“Just like it happens in the movies, it’s like, ‘Oh, you think this is perfect? You think this is great? Guess what comes with this,’” she added.

“I think it was very hurtful that I moved away from her to be with my dad and my dad wasn’t even there,” she said, reflecting on how her mom may have felt about her decision.

“I just wish I had been able to appreciate what she was doing for me. She was so focused on preserving my innocence. My creativity. Because she knew what the world is — that you don’t get that back.”
