Zazie Beetz is Waiting For Atlanta Season 3 With the Rest of Us, Says They're Hoping to Start Production in the 'Spring Sometime'

Think about this— the Season 2 finale of critically acclaimed Atlanta was in May 2018. And we haven’t even gotten production news for the third season.

This seems eerily similar to the feeling fans had when the freshman season ended and we had to watch show creator and star Donald Glover latch onto every project but his damn televised baby. Turns out, the busy life is the culprit in this case, too.

Zazie Beetz, who portrays Van on the FX show, chatted about the upcoming season while promoting her Sundance flick, Wounds.

“Ideally we would be shooting now; that’s not happening,” the actress told IndieWire. “Everybody’s schedules are sort of all over the place — they’re hoping for spring sometime, but no dates.”

No. Dates. *rubs temples*

“Everybody’s busy,” she continued, “and Donald [Glover] had his tour in the fall, and that doesn’t lend itself to time for scriptwriting. I know that they have a couple of episodes together, but I don’t have any real information.”

Yes, yes, I know, Glover has that movie with Rihanna in the works along with Coachella on the horizon. Brian Tyree Henry has been exquisitely showing us why he isn’t just the Paper Boi with his recent performances in If Beale Street Could Talk and Widows, and Beetz herself has High Flying Bird coming up.

IndieWire also made a good point about the show’s chances for this year’s awards season. It’s a favorite for the various academies, but timing may be its only enemy, here.

Said Michael Nordine:

The second season of Atlanta was nominated for 16 Emmy Awards. It won three at the Creative Arts ceremony, but was shut out at the Primetime Emmys in a surprising turn of events for the vaunted series. Season 3 would have to air prior to May 31, 2019 for the series to be eligible at this year’s Emmys, which does not seem likely at this time.

Armie Hammer, Beetz’s Wounds co-star, spoke for all of us when he said, “Get your shit together, Donald! We’re waiting.”

Yes, we’re waiting Donald. Or tell your alter-ego Childish Gambino to fill in for you. I hear his calendar recently cleared up.
