According to CBS News' national exit polls, black and youth voter turnout was low for the 2010 midterm elections. The youth vote — 18- to 29-year-olds — which helped catapult President Obama into office, made up an estimated 9 percent of voters this year, compared with 18 percent in 2008. About 58 percent of the youth vote favors Democratic candidates. Independents make up an estimated 28 percent of voters in the early exit polls, with 39 percent voting Democratic and 56 percent Republican. Black voter turnout also appeared to be lower during the midterm election. An estimated 10 percent of blacks voted, compared with 13 percent in 2008. The exit polling found that 8 percent of voters were Hispanic, with 66 percent voting Democratic. These figures might explain some things.
