If you need any proof that Vice President Kamala Harris has plenty of support for her bid for the White House, look no further than the record-breaking amount of money she’s raised. In less than one week, donors have come out in full force to support the Vice President. Her campaign has raised over 100 million dollars in donations including 81 million dollars in the first 24 hours after President Joe Biden announced his exit from the race on July 21. That massive haul set a record for the most money raised by a presidential campaign in one day in history.
But if you think all of that money is coming from billionaires and corporate giants, think again. This is truly a grassroots movement. According to the Harris campaign, the multi-million dollar haul has been attributed to over 1 million unique donors, including over 60 percent who are contributing for the first time.
Vice President Harris’ campaign for president has energized Black voters who want to help her make history. A July 21 Zoom call hosted by Win With Black Women gathered nearly 44,000 women across various industries and age groups to coordinate their support for Harris. Organizers hoped to raise 1 million dollars in 100 days. But in just three hours, they’d secured nearly 1.6 million dollars.
The next day, Win With Black Men followed suit, raising over 1.3 million dollars on a July 22 call according to organizers.
The Harris campaign believes that as she continues to take her message out on the road, it will energize even more voters to put their support (and their money) behind her.
“The historic outpouring of support for Vice President Harris represents exactly the kind of grassroots energy and enthusiasm that wins elections,” said Kevin Munoz, a spokesperson for Harris’ campaign. “Already, we are seeing a broad and diverse coalition come together to support our critical work of talking to the voters that will decide this election.”
