Conservatives are determined to justify their continued support for former President and convicted felon Donald Trump—and will stoop to any level to do so. On Monday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) showed just how low she will always go to protect Trump and the possibility of his second presidential term.
After a House subcommittee hearing about COVID-19, Greene shared her fury with several reporters over remarks made by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.). Raskin stated that Republicans were “bowing to convicted felon” Donald Trump after he told Americans to inject bleach to cure Covid-19 at the peak of the pandemic.
“We have Jamie Raskin in there accusing us of worshiping Trump, worshiping a convicted felon,” Greene said. “Yeah, so was George Floyd, and everybody—and you all too, the media—worship George Floyd. Democrats worship George Floyd. There were riots burning down the f****ng country over George Floyd.”
Donald Trump Jr. later echoed this sentiment on Instagram with a meme that stated: “Democrats: ‘I don’t know how you can a support a felon.’” Under that sentence was a picture of Floyd and Trump Jr. captioned the post: “The mental gymnastics here are staggering!!!”
“I’m tired of Democrat antics claiming Republicans worship Donald Trump. I worship God!” Greene later wrote on X. “Democrats are still worshiping Convicted Felon George Floyd.”
The comparison is not only offensive, but downright gross. Floyd was murdered at the hands of former police officer Derek Chauvin because he was Black—the subsequent 2020 protests that followed were a response to the police brutality epidemic which has always disproportionately affected Black Americans.
Trump is not only a convicted felon, but a flagrant racist who used his presidency to harm marginalized communities. He has also been found liable for sexual abuse and guilty of criminal fraud. Floyd had a criminal past—mostly comprised of nonviolent drug offenses—but that is irrelevant when it pertains to the violent and inhumane way he died.
The right is invoking this horrible false equivalence because they are running out of cards to play. As the November election inches closer, these tactics will sadly continue.
