We don’t know who needs to hear this but: It’s officially Colman Domingo season!
In addition to becoming an official Oscar nominee earlier this week, on Thursday, it was revealed that the “Euphoria” actor would be starring as not one but two major Hollywood icons: Michael Jackson’s father Joe Jackson in the upcoming MJ biopic and Nat King Cole in his forthcoming biopic.
When it comes to the King of Pop project, Domingo will be joining the cast alongside MJ’s real nephew, Jaafar Jackson, who was tapped to portray the “Thriller” singer in Jan. 2023. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film is reportedly already underway with an expected release date of April 18, 2025. Thankfully, the Jackson estate has given it’s stamp of approval and is involved in the film.
In a statement sharing the news, Domingo said:
“I’m excited to be a part of a film that explores both the complicated soul of the legendary Michael Jackson as well as his impact on music and culture as a global icon. Not only am I fortunate to have a rich, complex and flawed character to portray in Joe Jackson, but I also have a front row seat for Jaafar’s incredible transformation. After seeing him in rehearsal, my mind was blown. There is something divine about the way that Jaafar is channeling his late uncle. His talent and embodiment of Michael’s essence is simply on another level.”
As far as the King Cole project goes, Domingo will be making his directorial debut with the film as well as starring and co-writing, and he recently explained to Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast that he had been quietly working on for years.
“It’s something I’m looking forward to putting together with some great partners,” he said.
We’re all looking forward to it to, sir! As far as we’re concerned, get those Oscars ready now!
