Hip-hop star Wyclef Jean was shot in the hand in Haiti on the eve of the second round of presidential elections. Jean is reported to have been treated and released from the hospital. The circumstances of the Saturday-night shooting were not explained. Jean, who was disqualified as a candidate for president last year, has been supporting entertainer Michel "Sweet Micky" Martelly, who is in a runoff with law professor Mirlande Manigat.

The election got under way Sunday with some 5 million Haitians expected to vote for president and for senators and deputies in 76 runoffs. Whoever wins will take over the monumental task of rebuilding Haiti, still mired in rubble and political turmoil after the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake that destroyed much of the capital city and killed an estimated 300,000 people.

Jean has stayed close to Martelly since he was not allowed to run. Now that he has shed blood for his candidate, The Root wouldn't be surprised to see him get a cabinet appointment if Martelly wins. Minister of Culture Jean? Has a nice ring to it.
