A wrongfully convicted Queens, N.Y., man is expected to be freed from prison Tuesday after spending more than 16 years behind bars, his lawyer told the New York Post.
Tullie Hyman was convicted in 2002 of the murder of a Far Rockaway, Queens, tenant activist. However, that conviction was tossed out in July after witness testimony was discredited, the Post reports.
Hyman was serving 21 years to life in prison for the murder of 45-year-old Maria Medina, who was killed by stray bullets after being caught in the crossfire of a gunfight in March 2000.
One lone witness, Shaquana Ellis, testified that she saw the shooting, and she identified Hyman as the gunman during his trial. However, Ellis later recanted her testimony, saying that she had been threatened by someone at gunpoint to identify Hyman as the shooter, the New York Daily News reports.
