Work Hard, Play Carter: The Carters Take a Stylish Time Out in Italy

Here’s what I’m doing on my summer vacation: writing hundreds of posts for The Glow Up, maybe fitting in a trip or two to midwestern meccas in Wisconsin, Minnesota or Iowa to catch up with the fam, catching a few free concerts in the park in Chicago and intermittently catching a few rays at my building’s pool or while power-walking along Lake Michigan.

Glamorous, right?

Now, in contrast, the power couple known as the Carters is approaching summer vacay a bit differently; the two have been going almost nonstop on the European leg of their On the Run II tour (heading stateside at the end of this month) and managing to drop their surprise album, Everything Is Love in June.

But the couple knows when—and how—to take a break. After taking a mini family vacation in Cannes, France, just the week before, last weekend the Carters—who by now, surely know that the couple that plays together, stays together—tried out love, Italian style, taking advantage of their Italian tour stops to take a day off after their concert in Milan to hit a spa in Lake Como (which I’m guessing looks exactly like Lake Michigan) and grab a photo op in Rome.

And while I wouldn’t exactly call it a vacation, the couple did fit in some playtime—and at least one very meme-able moment—while taking a break from being On the Run.

But who are we kidding? We’re really here for the vacation fashion. Namely, this “Stars! They wrinkle just like us!” moment in Lake Como, where Bey was spotted in a multicolored, silk wrap dress from Italian brand MSGM (which Jay has also been rocking onstage during the tour), which she paired with PVC Manolo Blahnik mules. Equally colorful in a red tracksuit, Jay repped for Puma, where in June he was named creative director of the brand’s basketball division.

In keeping with the Italian vibe, Beyoncé appeared to be wearing an outfit from legendary Italian fashion house Pucci, giving her hubs a promising little peek of black, lace bra underneath (dare we guess it might be from Italian lingerie brand La Perla?).

In Rome, the couple stopped for a well-timed photo op at Stadio Olimpico, home of Italian futbol (soccer). The Italian team unfortunately failed to qualify for the World Cup this year, but the Carters were still winning. Is it just me, or is this goldenrod-colored dress by Danish label Ganni with yet another peekaboo bra giving us “Hold Up” (because I’m still watching you) vibes?

Bey (likely with the help of stylist Zerina Akers) once again paired the look with a pair of PVC sandals, this time from Alexander Wang. It’s a look she’s clearly (see what I did there?) been gravitating towards in the past year, as she’s been rocking transparent footwear on and off-stage (I mean, they do go with everything). As for Jay, aside from those classic Puma Clydes, we don’t have the details on his dad-chic look, but it’s low-key and lets his lady shine, so we’re here for it.

As the saying goes, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Frankly, this summer, I’d like to be doing as the Carters do—minus all that tricky choreography, of course.
