Players for the WNBA teams New York Liberty, Phoenix Mercury and Indiana Fever have been fined by the league for wearing plain black T-shirts emblazoned with the words #BlackLivesMatter and #DallasShooting after the recent shooting deaths of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, as well as the fatal shootings of police officers.
According to the Associated Press, each player was fined $500 and the teams were fined $5,000. The WNBA says the shirts went against the league's uniform policy.
The memo reiterated that only league-issued clothing may be worn, and it cannot be altered. The shirts worn were by Adidas, which is part of the league's uniform.
The Lynx players said that they will try to find another way to address the shootings, while the Liberty players said that they were willing to compromise and wear black shirts with the Adidas logo.
Most recently, the Liberty players wore the shirts not sanctioned by the WNBA on Wednesday morning in Washington, D.C., while the Mercury and Phoenix players wore their black shirts Tuesday night.
