Since Tiffany Haddish burst onto the mainstream scene in “Girls Trip,” she’s been one of Hollywood’s most polarizing actresses. Some viewers are fans of her over the top personality, while others find it unpleasant.
Her recent on-screen appearances haven’t been considered hits, and then there was that whole child sex abuse lawsuit that was eventually dropped.
Adding more chaos to her career, the “Night School” star has had more brushes with the law because of her alleged drinking habits. Over Thanksgiving weekend, Haddish was arrested for DUI and charged with two misdemeanors: “driving under the influence of alcohol and for driving with .08% blood alcohol content.”
According to Deadline, through her lawyer, she has pleaded not guilty to both charges. The actress/comedian now has a pretrial hearing scheduled for Feb. 14.
As previously reported by The Root, on Nov. 24, Haddish’s car was stopped on Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills, Calif. She was found “slumped over the wheel and the car was running,” and police took her into custody “for suspicion of driving under the influence.” She was released later that day, and went on to perform a stand up set at The Laugh Factory in Long Beach. She even referenced the incident on stage, saying, “I had prayed to God to send me a man with a job, career, preferably in a uniform, and I answered my prayers.”
Comedians making light of their legal troubles isn’t new, of course. However, when you allegedly drive under the influence, you’re not just endangering yourself, you’re putting everyone at risk, and that isn’t funny. There are way too many rideshare options at your disposal to be getting behind the wheel while impaired.
Here’s a hard truth for Tiffany Haddish: Although she might be popular enough to continue her comedy career, but Black actresses are already working at a disadvantage. Why add to the obstacles? There’s only so many chances, and some Black actors are already getting canned over their messy personal lives. Just ask former Marvel star Jonathan Majors.
To that end, other than the rumored “Girls Trip” sequel, she doesn’t seem to have any other big movie or TV roles in the works.
It’s time for her to decide if she wants to be known for this nonsense or for her work in films like “The Card Counter.”
