Reuters reports that Will Smith has emerged as the front-runner to star in Quentin Tarantino's next film, Django Unchained. Smith would play the role of Django, a freed slave who seeks to reunite with his wife by teaming up with a German bounty hunter to take down an evil plantation owner.
Samuel L. Jackson is also being considered for the character of Stephen, a manipulative servant to the leading bad guy. Tarantino plans to shoot the film in the fall in the South, possibly in Louisiana, but the exact locale has not been determined.
No official offer has been made to Smith, who is considered one of the top two or three box office draws worldwide, but he and his representatives have received the screenplay. It could be a controversial one because of the themes of racism and the liberal use of the n-word.
Can Smith and Tarantino together do justice to this story line? Weigh in below in the comments section.
