This world we live in has proved to be ... one strange rock, which is the name of the new National Geographic series that shows us all the wonders of the world. The cherry on top is that we get to learn about these wonders from the authoritative yet soothing voice of Will Smith.
Smith has become a social media superstar, offering us words of wisdom, epic drone shots and the most elaborate humble brags you’ve ever seen. He just celebrated 1 million YouTube subscribers, so using this iconic voice was obviously a great decision for the powers that be at National Geographic.
The Nat Geo channel teamed up with filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (mother!, Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream) and executive producer, Jane Root ( through her production company Nutopia) to create One Strange Rock, an epic, thrilling, mind-bending series that explores the fragility and wonder of planet Earth, one of the strangest, most unusual places in the universe.
For 10 episodes, One Strange Rock explores 100 full weeks of filming all over the world, from outer space and back, using micro- and macrophotography to bring cameras where they’ve never been before. What makes this series extra special is that it includes the thoughts of astronauts like living legend Mae Jemison, plus Nicole Stott, Mike Massimino and more—people who have left Earth before. Their personal experiences will serve as guides through the themes explored in the series, including the genesis of life, death, breath, cosmic violence, human intelligence, sacrifice, terraforming and more. This is a must-watch!
Aronofsky said at the screening that he’s excited to collaborate with one of his favorite talents, Will Smith: “His charisma, intelligence and humanity will add greatly to the project, helping welcome viewers into this unique narrative about the mind-blowing wonders that make life on Earth possible.”
Make sure you tune in to the National Geographic channel to watch One Strange Rock, starting on Monday, March 26, at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT.
