Why National Security Adviser Michael Flynn Didn’t Need to Resign

The Trump administration stinks. It has from the beginning, and two of the major offenses have been the administration’s obvious ties to Cousin Putin and lying. The entire campaign and presidency up to this point have had to answer questions about both, so it seems a little disingenuous that national security adviser Michael Flynn would resign from his post for lying about Russia.

On Monday, reports began swirling that Flynn lied to officials about his communications with the Russian ambassador to the United States. It was also noted that Flynn may have been in danger of being blackmailed by the Russians, CNN reports.

“I inadvertently briefed the vice president-elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the president and the vice president, and they have accepted my apology,” Flynn wrote in his resignation letter, obtained by CNN.

But here is the thing: Everyone in this administration, including President Pee-Pee, is vulnerable to being blackmailed by the Russians because this isn’t even real life anymore; it’s a bad episode of House of Cards, and the actors in this drama are a lot less appealing.

So it’s all coming out in the wash as Flynn takes one for the team. Did he talk with Russia about lifting sanctions imposed by then-President Barack Obama (pour a little out) for Russia’s involvement in the presidential election? Fuck yeah, he did, and the White House needs to stop acting as if it didn’t know.

Although no one knows the long-term play with this newfound love affair between President Pee-Pee and Putin, it’s clear that those two need to get a room. When the White House learned of possible deception going on right underneath its nose, it had Sean “Spicy Facts” Spicer issue a pearl-clutching statement.

“The president is evaluating the situation,” Spicer’s statement said. “He’s speaking to the vice president relative to the conversation the vice president had with Gen. Flynn, and also speaking to various other people about what he considers the single most important subject there is: our national security.”

The White House doesn’t care about anybody outside of the White House. Wait, I take that back; it does care about the 1 percent. What really happened here is that the “fake news” Washington Post got really close to the real news happening inside the White House, and the one thing President Pee-Pee will not have the American public knowing, ever, is the truth, so Flynn resigned, and not because he’s a liar with ties to Russia (even the president has that). He resigned because he got caught.

And the White House can act all sanctimonious and tell us how it won’t tolerate threats to our national security, but the biggest threat is still looking in the Oval Office mirror making sure his orange tan has been sprayed on properly and his wistful comb-over isn’t blowing away.
