It’s Meagan Good’s season! The actress has spent the last month promoting her latest film, “Divorce In The Black” hitting red carpets and morning shows in celebration. Even beyond the film, from a hit TV show on Prime Video to a new high-profile relationship with Jonathan Majors, it feels like the actress is everything, everywhere, all at once! But what led to such a cultural moment for the actress and model?
We should start with “Divorce in the Black,” which sees Good taking on a lead role in a Tyler Perry movie. For years it has been said how Tyler Perry does what he can to support Black actresses in the industry, giving work to and paying the likes of Taraji P. Henson, Gabrielle Union, and more for major lead roles years before their eventual continued success. With “Divorce In The Black,” it seems Good is truly stepping into the spotlight in a new way.
As The Root previously reported, Good revealed while promoting the film that this project is the first time she felt she was paid her worth. “He was like ‘You deserve this.’ I was already thinking in my head like, what I was going to ask, and I was like, ‘Oh, is this too much?’” she said on the Today Show when discussing working with Perry. “I was like, ‘I don’t want to lose the job.’ ‘Cause I come from that generation when you’re working in the ’90s and 2000s when women ask for something you are perceived to be a certain kind of way or when you show up a certain way.
We can’t forget Good’s current TV project “Harlem,” which is currently one Prime Video’s hit shows. The NYC set series has enjoyed rave reviews from critics and follows a close-knit friend group navigating their thirties. Recently renewed for a third season, the show should return to the streaming service soon.
Her high-profile relationship with Majors could be another factor that has her in the spotlight more than ever. Despite the precarious year in the public eye that Majors has had, Good opened up about her relationship with Majors being something that has gotten her through a year of change.
“One thing I know is that I can always look myself in the mirror when I trust my spirit, when I trust God, when I ask God, when I move to the beat of my own drum ... I can always look and say, ‘I’m proud of that,’” she also said on The Today Show. “Whatever happens, I have peace in my heart and I have harmony in my heart.”
