According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the custom goes all the way back to the early 1900s, when wearing white clothing was associated with the well-to-do. If you were caught wearing white clothing, especially after the Labor Day holiday, it meant you had the money to travel in the late summer months and were flaunting your status to others.
