Scotland Yard is investigating after a letter containing white powder that was claimed to be anthrax was sent to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry at Kensington Palace in London.
According to the London Evening Standard, because of security measures, the couple never saw the letter, but it did spark a full-on security scare. Analysis of the powder found that it was harmless, but the couple was still informed of the incident.
The letter was sent to Kensington Palace on Feb. 12, a day before police received another package containing white powder that had been addressed to the Palace of Westminster, where the two houses of Parliament meet. The substance in that letter was also determined to be harmless.
The Evening Standard notes that detectives are believed to be investigating if the two incidents are connected, as well as looking into a way to trace back to the senders. However, thus far, no arrests have been made.
The scare means that Scotland Yard will be on high alert leading up to Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding in May. The couple are expected to ride along a public route to greet the crowds after the ceremony May 19.
“They hope this short journey will provide an opportunity for more people to come together around Windsor and to enjoy the atmosphere of this special day,” Kensington Palace has said, the Standard noted.
