White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs — who sometimes unintentionally generated as much press for himself as he did for the president — has confirmed that he will step down from his two-year tenure. Gibbs is considered one of President Obama's staunchest supporters. A colleague of his commented that "Gibbs could be counted on to last all eight years if Obama were re-elected — and would be the one to turn out the lights." This reshuffling of staff has been a much-buzzed-about topic in recent months.
There is much speculation about where his next job will be — one rumor has it that he was jockeying for chairman of the Democratic National Committee — but the current DNC chairman, Tim Kaine, says that he's not leaving. For now, Gibbs has explained that his reason for leaving was more or less burnout and "wanting to decompress and drive his young son to school." There are plans to take on a more advisory role with the president, he told reporters, adding that he will recharge and gear up for the 2012 presidential election. Wherever Gibbs lands, he ought to get a letter of recommendation from the president.
