It’s summertime, and that means parties, weddings, barbecues, family reunions and, of course, line dancing. What does your favorite dance say about you?
1. Cha-Cha Slide
This Chicago dance, created by Chicago artist DJ Casper in 2000, has become a staple at weddings, birthdays, bar mitzvahs, proms, parties—essentially anyplace people have a reason to get down on the dance floor.
If the Cha-Cha Slide is your go-to dance, chances are you’re that cousin pushing little children out of your way as you rush to the dance floor. Nothing comes between you and seeing how low you can go.
2. The Wobble
The Wobble was originally recorded in 2008 by rapper V.I.C. It didn’t reach popularity until 2011 when it finally peaked at No. 77 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
The Wobble is for those who typically stick to a two-step but may have had an adult beverage or two. It’s also a favorite of those of us who will dance anywhere. The workplace? A baby shower? If this song comes on, all bets are off.
3. Electric Slide
This dance is a classic. Created by choreographer Ric Silver in 1976, the dance is set to the Marcia Griffiths song “Electric Boogie.”
If the Electric Slide is the one dance you choose to bust a move to this summer, chances are you’ve lived long enough to see a lot of dances come and go over the years. You’re, let’s say, “mature.” Also, you probably designed those lovely family reunion T-shirts. Thank you, Auntie!
4. Cupid Shuffle
This dance originated in 2007 and was created by Louisiana R&B singer Cupid. The song peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Like the Cupid Shuffle? You refuse to let a party go by without a chance to “walk it by yourself.” And once you “get down, down and do your dance,” you may even be bold enough to ask the DJ to play it again. (He will.)
5. Long Heels, Red Bottoms
Danced to rapper Trina’s 2011 song of the same name, this dance out of Miami has become popular nationwide.
Are you a Southerner at heart? Enjoy kickbacks and cookouts? Then you need to get on the dance floor when you hear this beat drop. You probably shouldn’t do it in heels. But you’ll try.
6. Booty Call
The remix version of the 1994 song “Booty Call” by the popular ’90s R&B group Blackstreet is used for the line dance of the same name.
If at any point in the 1990s you wore a lot of Cross Colours, Tommy Hilfiger or Coogi, then this is the dance for you. Fingers crossed that you’ve given up your baggy jeans but if you haven’t, don’t let that stop you from enjoying your song.
7. The Nae Nae
Atlanta group WeAreToonz put the Nae Nae on the map. Obama impersonator Alpha Cat takes the crown for “hitting” the best Nae Nae of them all.
If you’re hitting that Nae Nae at every event this summer … well, actually, you’re probably not reading this. You’re making Vines and having the time of your life. Enjoy.
8. The DLow Shuffle
The DLow Shuffle is the latest dance craze. Created by Chicago native D-Low, the dance has garnered a large following with YouTube views over 4 million. Even Steve Harvey got in on the action by asking D-Low to perform the dance on his talk show.
If you can bop like the best of them, you’re either under the age of 30 or truly young at heart.
9. Soul Train Line
This classic will undoubtedly make its appearance at every function imaginable. Its origins date to the popular television show Soul Train that aired in syndication from 1971 to 2006.
The person getting this started has likely been spending a lot of time dancing in front of the mirror since the show that inspired it first aired decades ago. But the Soul Train line is like the cousin that connects all black families, so he or she won’t be alone.
