The assistant principal of a North Texas school made her first public appearance to speak on the horrifying events that occurred in her classroom weeks ago. She says the incident left her with permanent injuries.

Collins Intermediate School assistant principal Candra Rogers spoke Tuesday about the incident from Thursday, Aug. 15. She said during lunch, she heard the behavioral teacher call on the radio requesting assistance. When she arrived, Rogers said a group of students as well as the teacher were standing outside the classroom. She said one student was holding his head, having been assaulted by the last student left in the classroom.

Rogers described this student to be “irate” and claimed the room was “ransacked” with overturned furniture.

“I spoke lowly and slowly so as not to enrage him any further,” Rogers said.

However, she said the student picked up a chair and threw it at her which she caught in mid air. The student threw another chair which she blocked with the first chair she had caught, she said. The student then picked up a third chair to throw at another assistant principal who arrived on the scene which Rogers blocked again from making impact.

However, the student wielded another weapon that turned matters into a life-threatening situation.

“After blocking the chair thrown at the other assistant principal, he threw a wooden hanger at me but I couldn’t stop it fast enough,” Rogers said. “The hanger hit me in my right eye and knocked it out of the socket. I grabbed my face while blood was pouring out of my head and stumbled out of the classroom.”

Following this frightening moment, Rogers said the nurse and 911 were called. She also said she asked for her husband to pick her up from the school, not realizing the extent of the injury she sustained. She said she was airlifted to Parkland Medical Center in Dallas where doctors immediately brought her into surgery.

Rogers said that while doctors were able to reinsert her eye, they told her she sustained permanent blindness and considered removing her eye completely.

“I’m still believing God for a miracle for restoration of my sight,” Rogers said.

Rogers said the Texas Education Code regarding how students are disciplined should be re-evaluated so no educator has to be placed in the way of danger. She also said Gov. Greg Abbott is culpable for what happened to her by his failure to properly fund public schools, therefore, depleting students and staff of their supportive resources to prevent these incidents.

Corsicana Independent School District released a statement saying they are cooperating with local law enforcement and the District Attorney’s office in the investigation into the incident. They also said there is no timetable for Rogers to return to work.
