New York authorities say they arrested a few suspects in connection to a fatal beating that occurred earlier this month. The death of the victim in the alleged attack broke the hearts of many Bronx locals.
People might think you’re crazy if you tell them they can find some of the best tasting fruit in the Bronx. Not only will you find good fruit, but you’ll also come into some kind street vendors - like 56-year-old Leslie Sanchez.
The known local fruit vendor was minding his business doing his usual sales on East Fordham Rd near Grand Concourse in Morris Heights the evening of Sept. 12 when authorities say he was ambushed by Romel Jarrett and Terrence Downes. The two wrestled him to the ground after witnesses said they appeared to be in a disagreement with the vendor, per The New York Post.
Police say the duo brutally bashed Sanchez in the head with a baseball bat. He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital in critical condition. However, he succumbed to his injuries two days later. The news of his passing left many locals with sore hearts. He left behind a wife, two boys and a girl.
“He was a peaceful guy. He took care of his family. He was the husband, he was the father…everything he did was for his family. This is just so sad. It was so cold-hearted. It was senseless. He just had a baby boy!” said family friend Autumn Pearson to The Post.
Pearson said the damage to Sanchez’s head was so immense, the family had a hat placed over him in his coffin. He’s since been cremated. Pearson also told The Post Sanchez sold fruit on that corner for five years after investing in the idea to sell fresh produce.
The two assault suspects are facing second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault charges.
