What Makes Lash Extensions Worth It? An Expert Weighs In

Eyelash extensions are a beauty indulgence that many women have been itching to try. I even caved in and tried it, but like many others, the prices are what deterred me—a recent college grad—from keeping up with the trend.

But if you’re going to invest, it’s safest to do so with an expert, like Clementina Richardson, founder of Envious Lashes. Richardson has been in the lash game for over 11 years; she was one of only eight lash techs in New York City when she began back in 2007, traveling throughout all five boroughs with her table, lamp and eyelash portfolio.

But word of mouth quickly followed Richardson, who finally met the increasing demand in 2011 when she opened her boutique salon on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The rest was history, as Richardson built an impressive list of clientele, including stars such as Naomi Campbell, Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett.

Speaking with People.com, Richardson shared some tips on what to expect and what to look out for when getting lash extensions:

  • “Do not go for the cheapest price, and take the time to do your homework.”
  • “Nail salons and nail techs are not licensed to apply lash extensions. I would stay away from that altogether!”
  • “Finding someone who is certified to apply the lashes is definitely a must. Depending on the state, the stylist also needs to be licensed, not just certified.”
  • “A beginner can really choose any set according to their preference. For clients going for a more natural look, I advise them to request a set of 80 to 90 lashes per eye.”
  • “Lash extensions are not as high-maintenance as people think. Avoid steam and wetting your lashes for the first 48 hours.”
  • “Lash extensions alone will not ruin your lashes. Damage to the natural lashes is the result of improper application, or the stylist not selecting the correct type of lash for an existing natural lash.”
