Based in Topeka, Kan., the Westboro Baptist Church said that it would be picketing the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of one-time vice presidential candidate John Edwards. The church, led by Rev. Fred Phelps, will be posted outside the Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh, N.C. Westboro members have also picketed military funerals to make their point that U.S. deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq are punishment for Americans' immorality, including tolerance of homosexuality and abortion. Signs like "Thank God for Dead Soldiers" have been raised at military funerals, and the church announced its latest action with a press release titled "God hates Elizabeth Edwards."

Only in America can a group of crackpots defile a sacred occasion under the guise of free speech. There is free speech and then there is harassment. The emotional abuse that this group inflicts on families that are in mourning is not only unconscionable but also immoral. We guess they haven't heard that God doesn't like ugly. We suspect they'll find out. Shaking our heads over here at The Root.
