Welcome back to New York Fashion Week! It’s always slightly strange to be falling in love with clothes we won’t be able to wear for another six months, but here we are again, forecasting trends for Spring and Summer 2019. But before you spend the next week wondering where all the black designers are, we should warn you: they’re unfortunately still few and far between at America’s most prestigious series of fashion presentations.
So, we were excited to unofficially kick off the week with the Harlem’s Fashion Row gala (HFR) on Tuesday night, which has made its mission promoting designers of color for over a decade. This year was their biggest celebration yet, as they welcomed LeBron James and Nike as co-hosts, and debuted LeBron’s first women’s basketball shoe, co-designed by black three female HFR designers.
More on that to come—including more details on the making of the shoe and a firsthand account of the festivities from an up-and-coming photographer enjoying her first Fashion Week. But here’s what else you can expect from The Glow Up’s New York Fashion Week S-S 2019 coverage: all the intel we can gather on black designers, models, influencers, celebs, street style and events this season—with, as always, our own take on how inclusion is progressing on the runways. It’s going to be a busy week—so let’s go!
