No, it’s not #ThrowbackThursday, but remember a time, say, exactly four years and one week ago today (a much happier, more hopeful time), when same-sex marriage was at last legalized by the Supreme Court, and the White House was illuminated in the colors of the rainbow in celebration?
Obviously, that ain’t going down in a White House inhabited by the likes of Donald Trump, but as Democratic presidential candidates marched on Sunday to show their support for the LGBTQ community, one hopeful made it abundantly clear what the Pride Month White House would look like under her watch...
And if the bedazzled rainbow denim jacket Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) wore to San Francisco Pride was any indication, her White House Pride celebrations would be lit.
No, really lit (at least, by presidential standards).
Just a few brief days after busing Joe Biden a few percentage points lower in the polls (and herself into a third-place tie with Elizabeth Warren), Harris kicked it into all-American-made high gear in a rainbow rhinestone jacket her traveling press secretary Kate Waters confirmed was made by San Francisco-based legacy brand Levi’s [h/t Glamour]. As if the jacket wasn’t enough, she wore it over a bedazzled black “Pride” tee, white jeans and Converse sneakers. Did the look perhaps verge on pandering to her LGBTQ constituents? Perhaps...but if so, it was pandering in style—and as jackets go, we much prefer one that visually screams “I Care!” to one that literally reads “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?”
While Harris does have an official collection of “Pride for the People” merch, Glamour reports that as of yet, Harris’ jacket isn’t an item available to the masses—though maybe that’ll change if she at least wins the popular vote.
