Rapper turned politician Moses “Shyne” Barrow has been making the rounds to promote his new Hulu documentary, “The Honorable Shyne.” Throughout his press tour, he’s been revealing some interesting stories from Bad Boy Entertainment’s peak late-‘90s/early 2000s era, when he was on the label. During an appearance on “The Breakfast Club,” he may have delivered the most shocking bit of tea we’ve heard in a while.
Shyne explained that when he signed with the label and got a taste of celebrity life, forgot why he was there and became involved in a shocking love triangle.
“Ma$e was dating a girl and I started dating the girl, and that caused a big thing. We had to have a family meeting,” he said. “It was like Kobe coming to the Lakers and going after Shaq’s joint. You can’t do that.”
Barrow elaborated on how he wasn’t taking his artistic responsibilities seriously, getting caught up in his own perceived success. “That’s what I was on in ’98, I wasn’t focused,” he said.
He goes out of his way not to reveal the woman’s identity, rebuffing Charlamagne Tha God’s attempts to get a name, but notes that the late DJ Clark Kent says her name in the documentary.
In the doc, the DJ alleges that the woman dating both Shyne and Ma$e was superstar singer/actress Brandy. Neither “The Boy Is Mine” artist nor the “It Is What It Is” podcast host have commented on the story.
But apparently, it was Brandy who snapped Barrow back to reality with an epic takedown that knocked some sense into him.
“We had an argument and she said, ‘You’re nobody. You ain’t sold one record. You think you’re stylin’, you think you’re that — you’re nothing. You haven’t sold a record,’” he said. “And that hit me like the hand of God to slap me back into reality because she was telling the truth.”
The Belize native’s music career came to an abrupt end when he became involved in the controversial 1999 nightclub shooting alongside Sean “Diddy” Combs and ended up spending nine years in prison. Since his release, he’s turned to politics and is now the Leader of the Opposition in the Belize House of Representatives.
