Have you seen the video of nearly 200 young white students at the University of Mississippi surrounding and shouting at a group of more than two dozen pro-Palestinian protestors last week?
If not, video of the incident has since gone viral, and it specifically shows a Black woman being surrounded by white students in the middle of the Ole Miss campus, shouting, yelling at and recording her.
Jaylin R. Smith, a 24-year-old graduate student who works at the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics at Ole Miss., stands alone as a crowd of defiant young people — mostly white men, some of whom are draped in American flag overalls — taunt her.
Someone is heard yelling “tag me on that” in response to being captured on video. Smith appears unbothered as she speaks back to the men, recording them in kind.
Watch below:
On Monday, it was announced that one of the students, who is part of the campus fraternity Phi Delta Theta, has been expelled from the organization for making ape sounds at the Black woman during their protests, according to NBC News.
The student who made ape noises while jumping up and down can be seen on the right side of the frame nearly eight seconds into the video. The name of the student has not been made public.
In a quote to CNN, Smith reassured that nothing these students did could hurt her, saying, “One thing that will never break me is people taunting me or making monkey noises at me.”
In a statement, Phi Delta Theta said, “Phi Delta Theta General Headquarters is aware of the video regarding the student protest at the University of Mississippi. The racist actions in the video were those of an individual and are antithetical to the values of Phi Delta Theta and the Mississippi Alpha chapter. The responsible individual was removed from membership on Friday, May 3.”
Furthermore, the university also has plans to launch an investigation into the behavior of at least one student who was present during the harrassment of the pro-Palestinian protestors.
More from NBC News:
Chancellor Glenn F. Boyce sent a letter to students and staff Friday noting that Ole Miss leaders were aware of behaviors that were “offensive, hurtful, and unacceptable, including actions that conveyed hostility and racist overtones” at Thursday’s protest.
“While student privacy laws prohibit us from commenting on any specific student, we have opened one student conduct investigation,” he wrote. “We are working to determine whether more cases are warranted.”
Although U.S. Rep. Mike Collins heralded the actions of the students in the above post on X, it led to a bunch of people on social media criticizing him for praising the discriminatory actions of the students.
Just read the comments on the post where he shared the video.
In a Monday statement, Collins said, “If that person is found to have treated another human being improperly because of their race, they should be punished appropriately, and will hopefully seek forgiveness.”
