Like his father, Beau Biden was dedicated to public service. While he was Delaware’s attorney general, he served in Iraq as a lawyer for the Delaware Army National Guard, MSNBC reports. He was also a top potential contender to become governor of Delaware.

“Like his dad, Beau was a good, big-hearted, devoutly Catholic and deeply faithful man who made a difference in the lives of all he touched—and he lives on in their hearts,” the president said in a statement released on the night of Biden’s death.
