Oscar-winning actress and comedian Mo’Nique has been on an ongoing quest to get her coins right, and we’re here for it.
As you’ve likely heard, the veteran comedian was offered $500,000 for a Netflix special, while Amy Schumer was offered $11 million, which she renegotiated into $13 million. Conversely, Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle were offered approximately $20 million each for similar specials on Netflix.
Here’s the problem: Historically, black men and women have been paid less than their white counterparts. And for black women, it’s the worst. In fact, black women are paid 63 cents for every dollar that white men make. This happens at every level of education.
Recently, The Breakfast Club reported that Tiffany Haddish received $800,000 for a Netflix special, while, years ago, Wanda Sykes received less than $250,000. Mo’Nique called for black people to protest Netflix because of racial and gender bias, and when it comes to black women in comedy, Mo’Nique has a point.
One thing Mo’Nique’s case has shown is that you can be an Oscar winner with a 30-year career and still be paid less than a mediocre white woman.
