Lil Wayne, the man who is partly responsible for bringing Drake and many others into mainstream rap popularity, has seemingly chosen a side in the beef of the year.
Over the weekend, Weezy performed a show Las Vegas. During his set, he starts to perform his popular 2011 Drake collaboration, “The Motto.” But instead of doing the original version of the song, Tunechi decided to switch it up and seemingly started singing the hook to Kendrick Lamar’s uber-popular track, “Not Like Us,” before continuing his performance.
While at first glance, it may seem like Wayne is enjoying the Drake diss, it turns out that he’s actually mocking it. If you listen closely, you can hear him singing “They don’t like us” instead of the song’s original lyrics, “They not like us.”
Furthermore, Wayne is also wearing an OVO Owl pendant, showing that he’s still supporting his Young Money protegé.
It’s about time that an artist comes out and supports Drake since it seems like the only artist who seems to have a plethora of MCs behind him is Lamar. But it makes sense that Wayne is one of them since he was named in the track he’s mocking. If you recall, in the second verse of “Not Like Us,” Lamar raps, “F***d on Wayne girl while he was in jail that’s conniving.”
This is about Drake confessing that he had relations with Wayne’s then-girlfriend, Tammy Torres, while he was in prison in 2010.
Still, none of Wayne’s mockeries seem to be slowing down the momentum of “Not Like Us.” On Monday, it was announced that the track recently reached the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 once again, making it the most-listened song in the country the last week.
It also makes the record K. Dot’s longest-running solo number-one single on the Hot 100, surpassing “Humble.”
