When Jay Z agreed to put on a concert to fire up young and black voters in Cleveland, he promised a few special friends. And baby, were they ever.
Those lucky enough to get tickets to Friday’s concert at Cleveland’s Wolstein Center were treated to performances by Jay, Beyoncé, Chance the Rapper, J. Cole and Big Sean.
Each of the performers brought it, and all of them had pretty clear words on who they were there for and who they were not.
Big Sean opened the show with a performance of “I Don’t F—k With You,” dedicated to “that other person.” Now, he told the cheering audience, “we with her.”
J. Cole performed in front of a sign of Clinton’s words: “Everyday Americans need a champion. I want to be that champion.”
Jay Z was up next and noted, "I don't have any ill will toward [Trump], but his conversation is divisive … he cannot be our president.”
"We have to think about the future of our daughters, our sons,” said Beyoncé, who came out to “Formation.” “We have to think about the futures about our daughters, our sons and vote for someone who cares about them as much as we do,” she said.
She recalled being thrilled that her young nephew was able to witness Barack Obama’s 2008 election as the nation’s first black president, and that now she wants Blue Ivy “to grow up seeing a woman lead this country and know her possibilities are limitless.”
“That’s why I’m with her,” Beyoncé said.
Jay then introduced Clinton, who had words of praise for the entertainment power couple. She called Beyoncé “an inspiration to so many others” and actually quoted a Jay Z lyric: “As Jay memorably said,“Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther King could walk. Martin Luther King walked so Obama could run. Obama’s running so we all can fly,” said Clinton. (Good one, Hillary!)
