African Americans seem to be the belle of the ball this election season, and so Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump made his call to a mostly black Detroit congregation Saturday.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Trump mostly stuck to a prepared script as he spoke at the Great Faith Ministries Church in the Motor City.

Trump surrogates Omarosa Manigualt and Dr. Ben Carson, a Detroit native, accompanied him to the service. The outlet reports that Trump later paid a visit to Carson’s childhood home in southwest Detroit.

As the service began, Trump, who was at the front of the church, began swaying to the hymnal “What a Mighty God We Serve.”

“This has been an amazing day for me,” Trump said after taking the stage. Saying he was speaking from the heart, he called the black church “one of God’s greatest gifts to America” and said that “for centuries the African-American church has been the conscience of our country,” lifting up our nation. Trump said he was attending the service “to listen to your message—and I hope my presence here today will help your message reach new voices.”

He continued, saying that America sidelines “young black men with tremendous potential” and that “our entire country misses out when we are unable to harness the potential and energy of these folks.”

There was reportedly a heavy police presence in the area as well as protesters outside the church, who chanted, “What do you have to lose? Everything!” an apparent play on Trump’s first direct appeal to African Americans, which didn’t go over so well.
