Black and Proud is a video series on The Root that focuses on the pride that our favorite black celebrities, tastemakers and thought leaders feel about being black. Many of them talk about our resilience and strength throughout history, some talk about our undeniable talents, while others mention our dance skills, dopeness and more.
Full Disclosure: The Root was flown to Detroit, to watch the triggering movie, Detroit. But at least I got to interview Algee Smith’s adorable ass!
Whatever the reasoning, it’s clear that being black is an incredible experience, despite society’s negative narratives around blackness.
You may have seen Algee Smith starring as the lead singer in BET’s New Edition Movie. He also shines bright as the star in Kathryn Bigelow’s controversial movie Detroit. He plays Larry Reed, the former lead singer of the Dramatics. While on a press junket for the emotional and violent film, I got to speak to Smith about his role in Detroit, and he revealed that it’s his connection to family that makes him the most proud. Check out the video above.
