Cleveland has released video showing the moment that 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot dead by police, Cleveland.com reports.
In the video, which lacks audio, Tamir can be seen getting up from a bench at a West Side recreation center, and walking as a police cruiser pulls up. In a split second, an officer exits the vehicle, gun drawn, and appears to immediately shoot the young boy, who falls face forward. The officer’s partner, who was driving, never exits the vehicle during that time span.
As the news site notes, Jeffrey Follmer, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, said the officer who shot Tamir was a rookie. The officers had been dispatched to the Cudell Recreation Center at around 3:30 p.m. Saturday after 911 calls were received about a “guy with a gun pointing it a people.”
The caller reportedly twice told emergency operators that the gun was “probably fake,” however that message was never passed on to the officers.
