With her curly hair pulled back into a ponytail and freckles on full display, at 11 years old, Meghan Markle knew sexism when she saw it. In 1993, Markle took on a sexist soap commercial and got a chance to appear on Nick News.

The commercial opens with, “Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans,” as if women are the only ones washing dishes. The commercial prompted the young Markle to write the president of Procter & Gamble and suggest that the ad’s language be changed to “people” all over America.

“I don’t think it’s right for kids to grow up thinking these things that just Mom does everything,” Markle said. “It’s always ‘Mom does this’ and ‘Mom does that.’”

And guess what? Eventually the commercial was changed. Watch the clip above.
