A new book about iconic athlete John Carlos is on the shelves. The John Carlos Story: The Sports Moment That Changed the World, written by John Carlos with Dave Zirin of the Nation, chronicles Carlos' life. The man rose to fame and infamy for giving the black power salute, along with teammate Tommie Smith, during the medal ceremony of the 1968 Olympics. Carlos and Smith were largely demonized upon returning to the United States and have spoken little about the incident since.
One-half of the pair is now telling his story in his words, offering insight into the precarious existence of being black and an athlete in a racially divided America.
