Maybe the Seattle police department should change its motto to, "Protect and serve up an ass-whipping even when it involves a black teenager."
A white police officer stopped a 17-year-old and 19-year-old black girl for jaywalking. The situation escalated resulting in the officer trying to grab the hands of the 19-year-old. When the 17-year-old tried to break the officer's grip, he punched her in the face. The incident, which was caught on video, also highlighted the anger of outraged witnesses. Both girls were arrested. The officer is saying that it was an act of self-defense. Civil rights activists are outraged and say that the punch was an action of anger not self-defense.
In our minds, punching someone in the face over jaywalking is never justified. How does it even get to that? On the other hand as black people, we know if we confront the police, there's a very high probability that it will end badly. Black bodies being policed while white bodies are protected, is as American as apple pie. The Seattle Police Department has some explaining to do.
