It’s looking like television and film executives learned a thing or two from the success of Dope, the coming-of-age story of three teenagers enthralled by the world of early 1990s hip-hop in California.

VH1 has an original movie coming out in early January called The Breaks, which follows the journey of three individuals trying to break into the pubescent hip-hop industry in 1990.

It’s got all the makings of a good, solid hip-hop movie: great music, fly fashion, and a cast with new and familiar faces, including Wood Harris (The Wire, Paid in Full), who reunites with another alum from The Wire, Tristan Wilds.

The Breaks airs Monday, Jan. 4, on VH1.
