Venus Williams, clearly emotional about a car crash she was involved in that left a 78-year-old dead, wiped away tears during a Wimbledon press conference in England on Monday.
She was recently found to be negligent in the death of Jerome Barson in Florida and is reportedly being sued for wrongful death by his family.
Instead of being asked about her win over Elise Mertens or facing off with Qiang Wang in the second round at Wimbledon, Williams was asked about the case. She had few words before she started crying.
“I am completely speechless and it’s just,” Williams said, looking away and wiping away tears. “I mean, I’m just ... ”
That’s when the moderator jumped in to briefly stop the press conference, saying that Williams can’t say anything further about the case.
The Daily News reports that a lawyer for Williams said that she was driving 5 mph at the time of the accident and that she wasn’t issued any citations or traffic violations by the Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Police Department.
