Serena Williams had her toughest opponent yet during Tuesday’s U.S. Open match, and it was her older sister Venus. But the younger Williams proved that she still had one goal in mind, even though it would mean defeating her own blood. Serena beat Venus with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 victory, advancing to the semifinals round of the 2015 U.S. Open and moving closer to a grand-slam win.
Serena served 12 aces and hit 35 winners, 11 more than Venus, which definitely helped her with the win.
“It’s great to see her play well,” Serena said. “Right down to match point, it wasn’t easy. It was the toughest match I’ve played in a long time, and I think if she had been playing any other player, she would have won.”
The 23,771 people gathered at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, N.Y., gave the Williams women their undivided attention. And you couldn’t tell who had the most spectators rallying behind them. Because why should you have to pick between two greats? Especially ones that are sisters?
Sibling rivalry may exist, but it doesn’t last very long.
“It’s a really great moment,” Serena said. “She’s the toughest player I ever played in my life, and the best person I know.”
