Every brand, film, and television show wants the most coveted spot in advertising: a game spot during the Super Bowl. Director and producer, Jordan Peele got himself two — count ‘em — two, in one day.
Let’s break down each one.
First up, that movie that fucking ruined and reinvigorated “I Got 5 On It” at the same damn time.
Us
1. There’s no Bay Area hip-hop classic being transformed into a nightmare this time. Alright!
2. This trailer is specifically from the perspective of Adelaide Wilson (Lupita Nyong’o) who muses about coincidences and the “black cloud” that hangs over them at their vacation spot. Per the film’s synopsis, Adelaide is the one with paranoia from a past trauma, so this trailer narrative make sense.
3. This trailer showcases some editing team flexing, so shout-out to them.
4. I had to pause this one after seeing blood marks on his head, but at the 0:06 mark there’s a dingy white man holding up a sign that reads, “Jeremiah 11:11.” That scripture is, and I quote, “Therefore, thus says the LORD, Behold, I am bringing disaster upon them that they cannot escape. Though they cry to me, I will not listen to them.”
5. Oh, shit.
Next, a reboot I’m excited as hell about.
The Twilight Zone
1. In a brilliant splice, Peele snatches CBS off air and literally takes its audience into The Twilight Zone, seconds after we’re seemingly brought back to the (reportedly boring) game.
2. Cutting his most expensive figurative check as he pays homage to Rod Serling, Peele’s hauntingly smooth and calm voice implores us to “Witness an empty space filled with thousands of screaming people...”
3. Then, we see that all-too-familiar hypnotizing swirl, taking us back to the original Twilight Zone we’ve cherished.
4. “When truth is not the truth, what dimension are you even in?” asks Peele as a mildly chopped-and-screwed version of the iconic show’s theme fades in.
5. Oh, shit.
Us releases in theaters on March 22. The Twilight Zone exclusively streams on CBS Access on April 1.
