In you've-gotta-be-kidding-me news, Luther Campbell — yes, that Luther Campbell — is throwing his name into the politics game. He hopes to run for mayor of Miami this year, if the Magic City decides to recall its current mayor, Carlos Alvarez.
It's been more than 20 years since Uncle Luke and the 2 Live Crew released "Me So Horny" and one of their most controversial albums, As Nasty as They Wanna Be. So perhaps the stripper-loving rapper is ready to take on a new challenge.
He tells the Miami New Times:
"I've thought about running for public office before, but someone would always end up talking me out of it, saying, 'We have this good person here, he will do good for the community,' so I always backed out. But I'd end up frustrated because they didn't do anything. I'd give them ideas and they would just tell me what [I] wanted to hear.
"I get in my car, ride around Liberty City, and everything looks the same as when I was in the neighborhood growing up. I see the same crimes in the same areas," he continued. "Officers and residents are still getting killed in the community I grew up in."
We've already covered Miami politics, money and fun in our City Profiles Series. But if Uncle Luke makes it on the ballot, we'll probably have to revisit the Magic City later on in the year.
