(The Root) — Twitter has been in a rage since TMZ leaked footage of Lil Wayne "trampling" an American flag while shooting a video for his song "God Bless Amerika." The song is a controversial one; its lyrics refer to America as "godless" and as the "sweet land of kill 'em all and let 'em die." The subject matter, along with the footage, has many calling Lil Wayne disrespectful and demanding an apology.
The footage shows Lil Wayne standing in front of a large American flag, pulled tall and taut behind him, rapping the lyrics to the song. The flag falls behind him, and as he moves, he steps on it, seemingly unknowingly. The way Fox and TMZ describe it, calling it "trampling," you'd think that he did a full-on Mexican hat dance on Old Glory.
Lil Wayne has tweeted an explanation, essentially saying that it was an accident, and it does look as if it was.
Regardless, much of Twitter is still calling for his head, though others see it differently.
No, there's NO excuse for trampling the American Flag, Lil Wayne. It's disrespectful, even if you don't include it in your video.
