While on the campaign trail at the end of October, President-elect Donald Trump made a stop in Gettysburg, Pa., and outlined his plans for his first 100 days in office.
The plan focuses on three main areas: cleaning up Washington, D.C., protecting American workers and restoring rule of law. NPR reports that Trump also laid out a plan for working with Congress to introduce 10 new pieces of legislation that would repeal Obamacare, fund the construction of a wall at the Southern border, encourage infrastructure investment, rebuild military bases, promote school choice and more.
In his plan to clean up Washington, Trump is advocating for term limits in Congress and a hiring freeze on all federal employees in order to reduce the federal workforce through attrition. He wants to create a requirement that for every new federal regulation, two existing regulations must be eliminated. He wants to impose a five-year ban on White House and congressional officials becoming lobbyists after they leave office, a lifetime ban on White House officials lobbying on behalf of a foreign government and a complete ban on foreign lobbyists raising money for American elections.
His plan for protecting American workers includes a renegotiation of NAFTA or a withdrawal from it under Article 2205; withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership; labeling China a currency manipulator; lifting restrictions on shale, oil, natural gas and clean-coal production; allowing the Keystone Pipeline to move forward; and canceling payments to United Nations climate change programs in order to invest the money in repairing America’s water and environmental infrastructure.
After making nice with Trump on Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell showed limited enthusiasm for the president-elect’s plans and shot down Trump’s idea of imposing term limits in Congress.
“It will not be on the agenda in the Senate,” McConnell said. “I would say we have term limits now—they’re called elections.”
According to NPR, McConnell said that Trump’s infrastructure plan was not a top priority, but repealing Obamacare, which will take away health care benefits from millions of Americans, is a “pretty high item on our agenda.”
Under the auspices of restoring security and constitutional law, Trump plans to fill the seat left empty by Justice Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court, cancel all federal funding to sanctuary cities, deport “criminal immigrants” and suspend immigration from “terror-prone regions where vetting cannot safely occur.”
McConnell said that comprehensive tax reform and achieving border security “in whatever way is the most effective” are also high priorities, but he declined to discuss the Senate’s immigration agenda any further.
“We look forward to working with him,” McConnell said. “I think most of the things that he’s likely to advocate, we’re going to be enthusiastically for.”
Trump says his action plan will make America great again.
