U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team star Trinity Rodman recently made headlines when she discussed her relationship with her father, NBA legend Dennis Rodman. She doesn’t usually talk about him, and now we understand why.
As previously reported by The Root, during an appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, she said, “He’s not a dad. Maybe by blood, but nothing else.” She also described how she didn’t enjoy her visits with him, calling the former Chicago Bulls player controlling.
“My dad, he likes to be in control. So he would take us shopping, get us phones, do this, do that. ‘Oh, I’m going to take you and your brother shopping,’ and me and my brother are like, ‘We don’t want to go shopping, we just want money to go get In-N-Out after school with our friends,’” she said.
She also claimed that his financial support significantly dropped after her parents’ split, revealing, “When the divorce happened, it was just like, ‘F**k you guys.’ … We’re getting enough money to pay rent, barely.”
The NBA Hall of Famer responded to her comments on Instagram. Alongside photos of them, he wrote, “Sorry I wasn’t the Dad you wanted me to be but either way I still tried and I still Try and Never will Stop.”
Now Trinity has reacted to his apology, and the NWSL (National Women’s Soccer League) star isn’t pulling any punches. “A joke. The response alone. And the attention. Wiping my hands with it and I’m done. Thank you,” she posted on Instagram Stories.
The news of their complicated relationship has led to discussions online about how younger generations respond to family dysfunction. Some say learning to deal with it is part of maturing, while others applaud the Washington Spirit forward for setting boundaries and speaking truthfully about her own experiences.
Since she’s made it clear she wants to keep the focus on her own career and accomplishments, we hope this is the end of their public back and forth.
