ABC News reports that South African police are investigating the death of an infant found in a bag belonging to a student at Oprah Winfrey's school for girls.

The baby's body was found last Wednesday in a bag the 17-year-old girl had brought to a hospital where she was being treated for excessive bleeding, police Lt. Col. Lungelo Dlamini said. It is believed that the girl gave birth at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, which is located outside Johannesburg. A spokesperson for Winfrey's academy in Chicago told ABC News that it would not comment on the incident because a minor is involved.

Although this isn't the first piece of troubling news from the academy (Shortly after the all-girls high school opened in 2007, a school matron, Virginia Tiny Makopo, was charged with sexually molesting several girls), we hope the public can manage to properly mourn this tragedy without allowing it to undermine the important services and opportunities the school provides to South African girls.
