Tiffany Haddish’s ascendance should surprise no one. The comedian-actress has been ready, and now she’s just reaping the rewards. Among them: landing the cover of Time’s 100 Most Influential People issue, a diverse list of the world’s most prominent news-makers and culture shapers.
Haddish joins Tarana Burke, founder of the #MeToo movement, on one of six available covers. Tennis great Roger Federer, singer-actress Jennifer Lopez, actress Nicole Kidman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also grace this year’s Time covers.
Haddish has been lauded for her comic chops, particularly for her breakout role in Girls Trip. Her “She Ready” stand-up tour earned her comparisons to Richard Pryor by acclaimed culture critic Hilton Als, and her appearance at this year’s Oscars alongside Maya Rudolph was among the most memorable moments of an otherwise long, dull show. She counts among her fans Kevin Hart, who penned the short essay for Haddish in Time magazine. He praised his Night School co-star for “bringing a whole new level of fresh to the comedy scene.”
“She’s just so authentic and unfiltered,” Hart wrote. “You never know what’s going to come out of her mouth. And you can tell she’s having fun—she’s seen a time when things couldn’t get any worse, and she’s giving it all she has.”
The wide-ranging list of influential people covers all manner of deplorables (Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions made the list) and delights (like Cardi B, Sterling K. Brown and Issa Rae). The list also features several notable celebrity write-ups, including former President Barack Obama, who penned an article about the Parkland, Fla., students, and Adele, who wrote about everyone’s favorite pop star/beauty mogul/bad gal, Rihanna.
