Lupita Nyong’o turned heads in the $150,000 Calvin Klein pearl dress she wore during the Oscars. But she didn’t have it in her possession for long, because it was reported stolen on Wednesday. The Los Angeles Police Department launched an investigation, but the culprit returned the dress to the scene of the crime before an arrest could be made.

According to TMZ, the thief stole the dress from Nyong’o’s room after he noticed the door was ajar. He then took two of the pearls to L.A.’s Fashion District but was shocked to find out they were fake. The thief returned the dress to the hotel and tipped off TMZ, which in turn alerted the LAPD.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman told the Los Angeles Times that the dress recovered is the same one worn by Nyong’o but did not indicate whether the pearls used to make the dress were indeed fake.

The thief told TMZ that the only reason he returned the dress was to prove how fake Hollywood is.
