(The Root) — Social media continue to have an impact on the way we do things. They're even changing the way we speak.

The Oxford English Dictionary has expanded the definition of the word "tweet" to include the action of posting an update on Twitter. This is significant because according to the OED rules, a new word or definition must be in use for at least 10 years before being admitted to its pages. This new definition of the word tweet, however, "seems to be catching on," notes the chief editor of the OED.

Other tech terms included in the OED update include "mouseover," "crowdsourcing" and "redirect."
