(The Root) — TV Land is set to debut its first black original series, The Soul Man. Starring comedians Cedric the Entertainer and Niecy Nash, The Soul Man is an uplifting and lighthearted sitcom about Boyce "The Voice" Ballentine (played by Cedric), a former R&B singer, who takes over his father's St. Louis, Mo., church.
While Ballentine's cavalier ways as an R&B crooner clash with the congregation at first, the singer-turned-reverend rediscovers himself through church and family. The Soul Man's effervescent attitude and playful plotlines make the new comedy worth a watch.
The Soul Man debuts Wednesday, June 20, at 10 p.m. EDT on TV Land.
